TITANIC : THE UNTOLD STORY

The untold mysteries of RMS TITANIC

RMS TITANIC is a world wide familiar shipwreck in the history .Also the story of the tragedy right from the departure is well depicted in the film THE TITANIC  by the world famous director James Cameron .When a question arise - What is Titanic  ? What happened to it ?
There would be 9 out of 10 people answering the question. The common answer would be Titanic was a gigantic passenger liner in the history that held 2000 passengers and started her maiden voyage from England but on her way to New York City ,she sunk by hitting an ice berg in the Atlantic ocean resulting in a loss of 700 lives .
But have you ever thought that how could such a massive ship that took years to build and the expensive ship during that time was not prepared for such natural occurings despite being a cold season during the voyage. If yes, then how could the 'unsinkable' and the strong liner sink ??
The RMS TITANIC and the crew were totally prepared for the maiden voyage but there occurred a series of events called 'Cascade of events ',that made her journey incomplete.

WHAT IS RMS TITANIC ?

The 'Royal Mail Steamer TITANIC ' was a giant British passenger ocean liner that was set for her maiden voyage in 10  April 1912 from Southampton England .The keel  plate was laid for the construction by designer James Andrews in the ' Harland and Wolff Belfast ,Ireland on March  31 1909. The 882.9 ft (269.1 m)  mammoth costed a $ 7.5 million  (£1.5 million) to build .3000 men out of 14000 in Harland ,were employed to build the beauty. It took 3 hardworking years to build the Titanic during which there have been 8 deaths ,28 serious accidents and 218 minor accidents in addition to the fatalities. After an enormous amount of man power and efforts ,the largest sail on float was launched on 31 May 1911 and was ready for it's voyage on April 10 .She was the Massive, gigantic ,luxurious ocen liner ever until then .

THE MAIDEN VOYAGE

The 'Titanic ' considered the safest ship was set for it's voyage in Southampton, England to  The New York City .The passengers boarded the ship from 9.30 am to 11.30 am on April 10 1911,with a total of 2224 passengers and crew with the Cap.Edward John Smith .Chief officer Henry Tingle Wilde was the second in command and Frederick Fleet ,the lookout. The vessel included people from various parts of the country ,over a 100 immigrants and people who wanted a new beginning in a new place .Many affluent personalities were present in the liner to experience the journey and over a 100000 people to  witness the remarkable history -creating  moment .The path of the Titanic was Southampton,England-Cherbourg,France-Queenstown,Ireland -New York,USA.The Ship was scheduled to reach New York on April 17 .The departure of the Titanic hit the headlines in numerous newspapers including Daily mail,Belfast Telegraph,The World etc...and was a moment of pride for England .

Last Hours of Titanic

The Titanic was sailing through the Atlantic Ocean no sooner it met it's end .At 11.40 on the 14th of April,(i.e.., the 5th day of it's maiden voyage ), Fredrick fleet spotted  a huge ice berg on the way of Titanic .Immediately the warning was passed on and the chief officer Lt.William McMaster Murdoch ordered a hard starboard(left) turn but was too late and the right side hull of the ship was hit to the ice Berg only 37 seconds past the sighting , causing it a heavy damage .The water entered the hull rapidly leaving a 2 hours time period for the ship to sink . Capt.Edwardmakes the first radio calls for help and  ordered the crew to suspend the lifeboats to the water with the passengers. But due to the shortage of lifeboats(reported to be 20 ) that could help only half the passengers on board ,the ladies and children were sent on the lifeboats from deck .By the time half the lifeboats were sent ,the water hit almost all the parts of the lower Titanic causing it to lose stability. On April 15 at 2.18 am ,due to the extended structure and minimum stability, the ship broke into two.Within 2.20 am the Titanic sinks into the Ocean causing a large amount of death .After 2hours of the disaster, the Carpethia hears the distress calls and arrives at the location .After an extending 4 hours of rescue mission ,Carpathia with the survivors head to New York City .The Capt.Edward John went down with the Ship along with the 1,502 passengers and crew and only 700 survived the tragedy .

The Unknown facts

After several years of the sink ,which is recorded as one of the disastrous incident with a huge amount of death ,in the history, there has been a number of researchs regarding the 'unsinkable' ocean liner .
  • RMS TITANIC,as the name tells is a 'Royal Mail Steamer' that held the mail's of the Royal Magesty to be delivered to the States .These mails were highly confidential that none of the crew members had access to it .
  • Since Titanic was one of the luxurious ships that was prepared to mark history of it's own ,many gruesomely wealthiest people were present on board including 'Jacob Astor IV' the richest person of the world that time worth a $150million which is $3.5 billion to today's money .
  • 24 engineers ,6 electrical engineers ,2 Boilermakers and a clerk who played a major role in the Titanic functioning ensured to hold the ship afloat as longer as they could and perished with the ship .
  • One of the ship's cook survived much longer than others in the sea due to the copious amounts of whiskey he drank .Many died due to the hypothermia within 15 mins .
  • It is reported that only 4 women died in the sink ,where the women and children on board were sent first in the life boats.
  • Out of the immigrants in the ship ,only one Japanese boy survived among the 700 .
  • Out of 4 smokestacks ,one was of no use at all rather it served only the purpose of asthetics .
  • The ship's band were prepared to death and played music to  keep the passengers calm until the very end .The yongest of the band Roger Bricoux who was only 21 years old ,and the band played music for continuous 2hours after the hit. They are called 'heroes' and played 'Nearer my God to Thee' a poplur hymn written in 1850's which is the last hymn played on Titanic .
  • Out of 4 women ,one women refused to leave her dogs on ship and went along the ship.
  • The ship could accommodate 48 life boats that could have provided enough seats for all the passengers but had only 20 lifeboats and were sent partially filled during the sink .
  • Senan Colony, who researched about the 'Titanic' for over 30 years identified a coal fire in  the 3 storied hull and claimed that this fire had been burning in the lower hull even before the departure that caused the iron to become weak .This hull is exactly the place where the ice berg was struck .
  • It it claimed that a specific lunar eclipse could have put the ice Berg in the path.
  • The binoculars of the ship we're stored in Crow's nest locker and the keys were with Blair ,the officer who was changed at the end of the departure and was realized after the ship left Southampton.
Though there occurred a cascade of incidents together resulting in the sink ,the innocent lives were victimized. They will always be remembered.Let their souls rest in peace.
