What are dreams ? Why do we have dreams? This is why..

WHAT ARE DREAMS AND WHY DO WE DREAM?

Remember you having a busy day and your body is totally exhausted and what is the only thing you crave for ? Obviously a nap or a sound sleep when it is almost the end of the day .Sleep is a major requirement for a human or an animal to stabilize the mind and the body for the next day. An average human Sleep for about 8 hours a day .But as soon as you fall asleep you tend to have various relatable or more often unrelated visions going on in your mind .During these visions on your mind ,you could never realize that these are just revolving thoughts on your mind but tend to believe that it is the reality .As everyone of us are aware, these are DREAMS.

Every animals on this planet sleep. When they sleep they tend to have dreams .As we are aware ,sleep is a process that helps our body to regenerate the energy that we have lost during work and gain rest to both the dody and the brain .We gain rest by being idle in a place .But dreams are the product of the activities occuring in the brain which shows that the brain is still working on something (dreams). Are we really getting rest while we are asleep and dreaming ? Initially, what are these dreams? And why do we dream ?
To understand this ,we must understand what is really happening when we fall asleep.

When we sleep ,we are subjected to enter various stages of sleep .Yes , there are four stages of sleep we enter into when we sleep .The first three stages are the NREM  (Non-REM) and the final is the  REM  stage.
Dream is said to be a succession of images ,ideas, emotions and sensations usually occur involuntarily in mind during certain stages of sleep though the purpose of a dream is not really understood .

  • STAGE 1: This is the stage we enter as soon as we fall asleep .In this stage ,we have a light sleep where our body is prepared to enter into the later stages .This lightest stage of sleep  with the presence of drowsy eye movements can be easily disrupted subjected to waking up .and the person may also claim that he was not sleeping .
  • STAGE 2 :  In this stage , Awakening or arousals do not occur as easily as compared to the first stage . The rapid eye movements slow down with body temperature beigining to reduce and with reduced heart rate .
  • STAGE 3: This stage is the deepest NREM stage where arousals are rare .Parasomnias (abnormal activities like sleep walking ,nightmares ,sleep enuresis, sleep talking ) occur during this stage of deepest sleep .The person is not subjected to remember any of the activities done during this stage .This stage include brain waves called the delta waves or slow waves .

Before getting to the next and last stage of sleep which is referred to as the REM  stage ,we got to understand what REM is .

REM  (Rapid Eye Movement) stage was discovered by Eugene Aserinskey   and   Nathaniel Klietman       of University of Chicago in 1953. This stage takes place around 90 minutes after you fall asleep and can vary upto 20- 30 minutes duration. The dreams strongly occur during this stage .
  • During this stage ,dreams occur of various kinds i.e. Frightening, exciting, magical , adventurous, sexual or false Awakening.
  • We tend to believe  that these visions that we have is the reality and u have a complete control over your actions towards it .Since the muscles are completely turned off in this stage of sleep ,you are not able to respond to the dream in reality .If you could then the results would be ridiculous.          For example ,imagine you are having dream where you are intimate with your beloved ,then what would be the position of the person next to you (pun intended )
  • These stages of dreams occur in cycles .We are subjected to have many cycles during a one night sleep thus, have many different dreams.

False awakening

We would often have dreams like we would wakeup and perform  our daily routine without even realizimg that we are dreaming and we tend to believe that we are doing all these in reality. This is totally normal which is called the false awakening.

Remembering our dreams

In many instances we would have come across people saying that they remember their dreams or we would have experienced ourselves in such a situation where we would recollect our dreams ,this is because a person wakes up during the REM stage which includes strong brain waves called the alpha waves .These waves are the same waves that our brain emits when we are awake Hence, our brain activity is as same as that of the activities when we are awake and conscious . Therefore enabling us to recall the dreams we had (or a part of it ) last night.

What is sleep paralysis? Causes ,Symptoms and cure .

Sometimes people would suddenly wake up during the sleep (mostly during the night time) and not be able to move any part of the body  though their eyes can move .This condition is called sleep paralysis. This usually occurs with people having narcolepsy which is a sleep  disorder with symptoms including sleep in various times even during the day .A person with this disorder tend to reach the deepest sleep stage REM easily and soon ,unlike others.

Sleep paralysis usually occur with strange and horrifying images (generally horrific shadows ) and the person wakes up in fear experiencing Inability to move . Though the reasons behind these scary images are unknown, sleep paralysis is caused due to
  • lack of sleep
  • change in sleep schedule
  • Depression and stress
  • Uses of medication, such as those for ADHD
  • Abuse of substancesMental disorders such as bipolar disorder or narcolepsy.
This can be treated by maintaining a healthy  sleep schedule, using antidepressant, treating the mental health if any ,that contribute to sleep paralysis, treating if narcolepsy.

Subconscious mind and dreams

Before getting to know what is the relation between your subconscious mind and dreams we must understand what a subconscious mind is .
In short , a subconscious mind is a part of your brain that stores all the memories that impacts a person strongly .It controls a person's confidence, emotional stability . Therefore, if a person is confident on  something or anxious it all because of his subconscious memory that reminds him of the incidents that happened in his past that affected him emotionally .

Hence, subconscious mind plays a major role in dreams .It controls the sequential visions taking place in our dreams and that is why the dreams are said to be a product of the emotional status that you be in, when your awake. This is also the reason that people tell to sleep with a positive mind to have a sound sleep though by not realizing anything about the subconscious mind play taking place.

Lucid dreaming

Sometimes ,we would know that we are dreaming while sleeping itself and tend to consciously control our actions in that dream .Isn't it amazing to have control in our dreams ? This is called lucid dreaming (mention in the comments if you want a separate article on it )

The dreams basically occur in symbols and metaphors thus, being difficult to  understand the dreams and it's meaning and recalling it. But these dreams are widely related to the life events and experiences that we have had since it is controlled by our subconscious mind .

Over the couple of centuries and decades we can come across various perspectives by different scientific scholars and researchers .The most common and popular of all is "THE INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS" by Sigmund Freud ,the founder of psychoanalysis.According to him dreams represented unconscious desires and thoughts .He also stated that people are driven by aggressive sexual instincts that are repressed from conscious awareness. Meaning being ,the dreams are just the thoughts and desires one has which can be achieved via these dreams mostly sexual, emotional ,scary etc.
By the ancients it is also being claimed that we are dreams are subjected to keep us aware about the upcoming harmful or dreadful situations.
